GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH

William Williams, 1717–1791

Since You are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of Your name lead and guide me. (Psalm 31:3) The need for daily guidance is one of the believer’s greatest concerns. How easily our lives can go astray without the assurance of divine leadership. Today’s featured text is one of the great hymns of the church on this subject. It is a product of the revival movement that swept through Wales during the 18th century. This revival was led by a 24-year-old Welsh preacher, Howell Harris, who stirred the land with his fervent evangelistic preaching and his use of congregational singing. One of the lives touched by Harris’ ministry was 20-year-old William Williams. Young Williams, the son of a wealthy Welsh farmer, was preparing to become a medical doctor. But, upon hearing the stirring challenge by evangelist Howell Harris, Williams dedicated his life to God and the Christian ministry. William Williams, like Harris, decided to take all of Wales as his parish and for the next 43 years traveled 100,000 miles on horseback, preaching and singing the gospel in his native tongue. He became known as the “sweet singer of Wales.” The symbolic imagery of this hymn is drawn wholly from the Bible. The general setting is the march of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. Although the Israelites’ sin and unbelief kept them from their destination for 40 years, God provided for their physical needs with a new supply of manna each day. Twice during the Hebrews’ years of wandering, they became faint because of lack of water. At the command of God, Moses struck a large rock with his wooden staff. Out of it flowed-a pure, crystalline stream that preserved their lives. God also continued to guide them with a pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim thru this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty—Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand: Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more. Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through; Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, be Thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me thru the swelling current; land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.          For Today: Psalm 16:11; Psalm 32:8 ; Isaiah 58:11; Romans 8:14 Claim God’s promises for your life in even the small decisions you will be called upon to make this day. Then, begin to praise Him.

Children Back to School Fun Day

Chúa nhật 19/08 Ban Thiếu nhi đã tổ chức một ngày vui cho các em thiếu nhi trước khi các em trở lại trường học cho niên khóa mới.

Cùng ngày Ban Nam giới sinh hoạt với bài nói chuyện của ông Trương Thanh Bình với đề tài "Kiếp người". Dựa trên sách Truyền đạo và nhiều câu chuyện minh họa thật sinh động, diễn giả đã trình bày sự ngắn ngủi của cuộc đời. Đời người nhiều lúc thăng trầm, đôi lúc như đi trong sa mạc khô hạn, nhưng hãy trung tín theo Chúa, vì một ngày kia chúng ta phải khai trình những việc mình làm với Chúa. Diễn giả kể lại ảnh hưởng tốt đẹp của hai người bạn thân trên đời sống đức tin của mình và kêu gọi quí nam giới sử dụng thời gian sắp tới để ảnh hưởng tốt và gây dựng đời sống đức tin người khác, đừng đợi đến buổi xế chiều sức mòn lực cạn rồi mới dâng cho Chúa một đóa hoa "tàn héo"

Cùng ngày Ban Phụ nữ có một buổi sinh hoạt vui vẻ với đề tài Hương thơm Hoa Hồng (The Fragance of Beauty) nói lên cái đẹp và hương thơm của người phụ nữ Cơ đốc. Sau phần học Kinh thánh do Bà Mỹ Linh phụ trách, bà Bích Lan hướng dẫn cắm hoa. Sau giờ nhóm, mỗi phụ nữ ra về với bình hoa đầy hương sắc.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

In our fast-paced daily life, how easy it is to get caught up in the “things of earth” so that eternal values become blurred and almost forgotten. As we conclude the first month’s journey through this new year, we need today’s hymn to remind us that we must continue to make Christ the central core of our lives—to pursue the Kingdom of God and His righteousness—if we are to be victorious believers.

In 1918, Helen Howarth Lemmel, the author and composer of this hymn, was given a tract by a missionary friend. As she read it, Helen’s attention was focused on this line: “So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face, and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.” She related:

Suddenly, as if commanded to stop and listen, I stood still, and singing in my soul and spirit was the chorus of the hymn with not one conscious moment of putting word to word to make rhyme, or note to note to make melody. The verses were written the same week, after the usual manner of composition, but none the less dictated by the Holy Spirit.

Since that day, Helen Lemmel’s hymn has been translated into many languages and used by God to challenge believers around the world with the necessity of living devoted lives for His glory.

O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free!

Thru death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there; over us sin no more hath dominion—For more than conq’rors we are!

His word shall not fail you—He promised; believe Him, and all will be well: Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell!

Chorus: Turn your eyes upon Jesus; look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
